Where Claymont is

Claymont is a census-designated place in New Castle County, Delaware. It covers about 2.2 square miles and had 9,895 residents at the 2020 census.

History

Dutch colonists named Naamans Creek for a Lenape chief. The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad station, built in 1838, helped turn the area from farmland to an industrial community. Naamans was renamed Claymont in 1856 for the Reverend John B. Clemson.

Landmarks

Landmarks include the Claymont Stone School (established 1805), Darley House (1859), the Robinson House with its Block House, and Archmere Academy (1916).

Getting around

Claymont Station serves SEPTA Regional Rail's Wilmington/Newark Line. Interstates 95 and 495, U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 92 serve the area. A $71 million Regional Transportation Center began construction in 2019.
