Hockessin was founded as a village in 1688. The origin of the name is debated: it may come from a Lenape word, or from "Occasion," a property settled by William Cox in 1726.
Delaware Route 41 (Lancaster Pike) heads southeast toward Wilmington and northwest toward the Pennsylvania border. DART First State provides bus service on Route 20.
