Where Kennett Square is

Kennett Square is a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and a suburb of both Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware. It covers just over one square mile and had 5,936 residents at the 2020 census. The borough was incorporated in 1855.

The Mushroom Capital of the World

Kennett Square is known as the Mushroom Capital of the World. The borough's own website says mushroom farming in the region produces over a million pounds of mushrooms a day. The town celebrates that heritage every fall with its Mushroom Festival.

Getting around

Pennsylvania Route 82 is the main numbered highway serving the borough, and U.S. Route 1 bypasses it to the north. Longwood Gardens sits on Route 1, about 3 miles northeast of town. From the Gardens, Wilmington is about 12 miles and Philadelphia about 30 miles, according to Longwood's own directions.

Things to do

Longwood Gardens. A large public garden on U.S. Route 1, about 3 miles from downtown Kennett Square.

Anson B. Nixon Park. A 106-acre park just north of downtown, off North Walnut Street near State Street. It has two ponds, walking trails, a playground, picnic pavilions and a disc golf course, and the Red Clay Creek Trail begins there.

KSQ Farmers Market. Every Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Borough Hall, 600 S. Broad Street, with free parking. It has been serving the community since 2000 and brings in local farmers and food makers.

The Mushroom Festival. Held the weekend after Labor Day in September, with a culinary stage, mushroom cooking competitions, more than 220 vendors, grower exhibits, a kids' zone and live music.

Through the year

Kennett Collaborative, the nonprofit that works on downtown, organizes a calendar of events: Third Thursdays on State Street, the Kennett Brewfest (running since 1998), the Memorial Day Parade, Kennett Summerfest, the Clover Market, the Holiday Light Parade, the Holiday Village Market, Tinsel on the Town and Kennett Winterfest.

Schools

The borough is served by the Kennett Consolidated School District, which also covers Kennett Township, New Garden Township and the southern part of East Marlborough Township. Buyers can look up the district and its schools directly before choosing a home.
